In a highly unexpected move, the man known to his legions of fans as ‘Mr Wonderful’, the long time staple and mainstay of the 205lb division has signed with Bellator.
That’s right folks, it seems that the UFC has decided against renewing Davis’ contract allowing him to sign for their biggest rivals.
On announcement of the move Davis said “I can’t wait to be fighting in Bellator and wreck shop on everyone,” proclaiming “I am the absolute best and most dominant grappler to ever fight in MMA, and I’m excited to get in there and compete at my new home.”
While that statement is probably only believed by Davis himself, the news does come as something of a shock, if not altogether surprising. While they pulled out the stops to retain Gil Melendez and snatch back Mirko Cro Cop, the loss of a fighter in the lower half of the top ten, Davis has a reputation for being nosebleedingly boring inside the octagon, something that has not always gone down well with the fans.
Perhaps, and a more skeptical view, those around Davis realised that he was miles away from a title shot against current UFC Light Heavweight Kingpin Jon Jones, and in a relatively talent weak organisation such as Bellator he could just be the guy to thrive. All of this setting up an eventual return to the UFC as a champion of a rival promotion. On the other hand, he may just be exposed as overblown with an inflated reputation; who knows?
